2011 NCITE Paper Competition

The North Central Section of the Institute of Transportation of Engineers (NCITE) is proud to offer a paper competition with one – $500 award for the best student paper.  It is open to all undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Minnesota, South Dakota State University, and North Dakota State University who are enrolled in Civil Engineering or a transportation-related field.  

The purpose of the paper competition is to encourage students to further investigate transportation subjects.  It is encouraged that these papers be original, but coursework papers are acceptable.  The paper may be on any subject, study, or experience of the student’s selection which pertains to transportation engineering or transportation planning.  Papers must be a minimum of 3 pages, single-spaced, but no more than 8 pages, single-spaced.  No award will be made if, in the judgement of the selection committee, none of the papers received meet acceptable levels in all of the following criteria on which the papers will be judged: 

1.)        Technical merit (0-5 points)

2.)        Clarity and organization (0-5 points)

3.)        Completeness as related to stated purpose (0-5 points)

4.)        Applicability to current issues facing the transportation engineering profession (0-5 points) 

Paper competition applications are available in electronic version (Microsoft Word format).  Electronic submission of the paper and application form on the following page are preferred. All applications must be received (electronic copy) or postmarked (hard copy) by Friday, February 11, 2011. The winning paper will be submitted to ITE District 4 and possibly ITE International for further student paper awards and possible publication. Please submit one copy of the paper.  The paper will be posted to the NCITE website (www.nc-ite.org) following the announcement of the award, unless requested otherwise in your application. If a hard copy of the paper is submitted, the paper will not be returned to you.
